The Albumin/Globulin Ratio in Serum

THE SEPARATION of albumin from its associated globulins in serum or plasma has exercised physiologists and biochemists for many years. Several methods are available for assessing the albumin content of serum by prior precipitation of globulins (1-9). In 1949 Martin and Morris (10) examined a series of methods (1, 2, 5-7) and concluded, by comparison with the results of “free” electrophoresis, that the methods of Majoor, and of Pillemer and Hutchinson, afforded the best separations of albumin. Kaplan et at. (11), and Jager et at. (12) made similar comparisons with the results of protein paper electrophoresis. The objects of the study reported here were threefold: 1. To test the efficiency of salt fractionation methods using protein paper electrophoresis. 2. To indicate a salt fractionation method which appears to be a marked improvement over previous methods. 3. To compare the results of this latter method with the results obtained by full paper electrophoretic procedure.
